Adrian Tchaikovsky

In June 1972, Adrian Czajkowski was born in the English village of Woodhall Spa, in a landscape as vast as the worlds he would later create. He studied psychology and zoology at the University of Reading – a combination that would shape his later work: a fascination with alien consciousness, insects, spiders, and intelligent life beyond human norms. For fifteen years he worked as a legal assistant in Reading and Leeds before his debut appeared in 2008. Under the pseudonym Adrian Tchaikovsky – modeled on the birth name of his Polish family – he has since published one of the most versatile science‑fiction and fantasy series in contemporary literature. With his novel The Children of Time Tchaikovsky won the Arthur C. Clarke Award in 2016, that prize for the best science‑fiction book of the year in the United Kingdom. The story of a spider civilisation that evolves over millennia became a breakthrough – not despite, but because of its radical perspective. His ten‑part Shadows of a Pale series and the Children of Time trilogy made him one of the most productive authors in the genre. Tchaikovsky explores AI, alien consciousness and the limits of humanity in his work, always grounded in his zoological training. In 2019 the University of Lincoln honored him with an honorary doctorate. In 2025 Tchaikovsky was nominated three times for the Hugo Award: with the novels Alien Clay and Service Model, and with his series The Tyrant Philosophers. His novella Saturation Point, awarded the British Science Fiction Award in 2024, is being adapted by Universal Pictures. The author lives with his family in Leeds and writes from there stories that do not ask how aliens look, but how they think – and what it means when the human is no longer the sole standard.
