Kaliane Bradley

In Walthamstow, in the London East End, a girl grew up between two worlds in the 1990s – daughter of a British father and a Cambodian mother. Kaliane Mong Huxham Bradley, born in 1989 or 1990, spent her childhood with a half-brother and twin sisters in a small house before the family moved to Essex. This dual perspective, both British and Southeast Asian, would later become the core of her literary work. After studying English at University College London, Bradley began working for Granta in 2012, where she rose to the position of Commissioning Editor. At the same time she wrote theatre and dance reviews for The Guardian, Time Out and The Stage – a journalistic practice that sharpened her eye for rhythm and language. In 2022 she won the Harper’s Bazaar Short Story Prize for “Golden Years” and the V.S. Pritchett Short Story Prize of the Royal Society of Literature for “Doggerland”. The breakthrough came in 2024: her debut novel The Ministry of Time blends time‑travel science fiction with a romance between a British-Cambodian civil servant and Graham Gore, a 19th‑century polar explorer who was supposed to have died on Franklin’s lost expedition. Bradley had been inspired by the AMC series The Terror during the Covid lockdowns. The novel became an international phenomenon – a New York Times bestseller, named Barack Obama’s summer favourite and nominated for several awards, including the Waterstones Debut Fiction Prize. Bradley’s work combines light‑hearted humour with serious questions about colonialism, the climate crisis and identity. The Ministry of Time was on the 2025 Hugo shortlist, but did not win. The BBC had already commissioned screenwriter Alice Birch before the book’s release to create a six‑part series adaptation. Bradley is working on a second novel – a neo‑noir retelling of Greek mythology.
